WHEN QUO PUT ANTWERPEN ON FIRE.....
Saturday 17th of May, The Quo made a great comeback to the famous event called “Night Of The Proms”.
This event usually takes place from October to December, as some of you will surely remember. Status Quo was already the guest in the 1999-Edition, playing some 35 shows over 5 countries amongst them Germany.
But on the 17th May of 2003, a Belgian mobile provider called Proximus organized for their most faithful members an exclusive private performance of the NOTP. And, as guest star, they invited….Status Quo!!
The most brilliant idea someone could have, the certainty of a great evening…and it sure was for the 12.500 people in the assistance. Yes, 12.500 people!! This very big arena, the biggest in Belgium, was completely full. As this performance was private, there had been no advertising, and the tickets were only sent to the members of Proximus. Thanks to the kindliness of a real friend, I had the opportunity to follow the performance backstage.
The ones of you who went to the Proms in 1999 know how it takes place : a bunch of artists plays with an orchestra some of their greatest hits. The schedule had not changed that much. We had a first part with some artist as Mark King (Level 42), John Miles, Bonnie Tyler (still very attractive), or the French star Florent Pagny, not to forget the philharmonic orchestra and the choir.
Then, in the second part, came what we were coming for. After some classical works played by the orchestra, they started to play the now very famous “Quo-intro”
After that, Francis, Rick, John, Andy and Matt hit the stage and started a rocking performance by…nothing less than Caroline. A song that they had never performed before with an orchestra. Once again, the Quo, and especially Rick’s intro blow the orchestra away!!
Then Quo carried on with Whatever You Want and Rockin’All Over The World.
The funny thing was that, along all the performance, the audience was and remained seated, quietly listening to the different artists. When Quo started Caroline…the crowd remained seated, but some of them started clapping in their hands….and when this irresistible intro of Whatever You Want came, the crowd, as one person, stood up, and several hundred rushed onto the first row. It was absolutely amazing to see this spontaneous reaction of the crowd. Once again, Quo showed clearly they have an incredible strong power of attraction on an audience. 12.500 were really bouncing, and that was absolutely fabulous to see.
After this storming gig, the orchestra played a last classical one on his own, just before all the artist of the evening, including the five Quo-boys, came back on stage to finish the evening singing Hey Jude all together with the public. It was funny to see how ill at ease Matt was with a micro in his hands.
Once again, Quo was the topper of the evening, even if they played only three songs. I’m positive that Quo will be once more at the NOTP, for a full tour, sooner or later.
